Should Ductwork Be Replaced in North Hollywood, CA? Central AC Not Cooling House & More

Not everywhere in California has perfect weather and some places can get really hot. To ensure your home stays cool efficiently and effectively, the duct work must be designed correctly and be in good condition. There comes a time in every home when the duct work will need to be replaced. JMS Air Conditioning & Heating will share what signs to look for in your duct work system and when it will need to be replaced.

Air Conditioner Not Cooling the House

Often duct work or the air duct system is hidden from view. Much of it is in the attic and some inside the walls. It is not always on the top of every homeowner’s mind to check their duct work. However, when you notice that the home is taking longer to cool down or it never cools down to the designated temperature, then there may be a problem with the duct work. This is a classic sign that your duct work has a leak and typically a split. Air duct systems use many sections that are connected and sealed together. Over time the air ducts may split apart and need to be resealed. However, in some cases, it could be damaged and much of the time, the damage is done by pests. Rodents can chew through flexible or fabric style air duct material. Metal materials can develop rust that eats through the metal leaving small holes for the conditioned air to pass through. If your home takes a long time to cool or never cools down properly, the air ducts may need to be replaced.

Weak Air Flow from Vents in House

When you hear the air conditioner running but the home is not cooling down, put your hand in front of one of the vents. If the air flow seems weak, this can indicate a problem with the air duct system. This could be due to poor design. However if it is a recent problem it could be due to a split or damaged duct. Similar problems of poor cooling can occur and it may also result in weak air flow.

Repair Damaged Ductwork

Many homeowners are involved in their home’s maintenance. If you are ever crawling around the attic and notice exterior damages to the duct work, take action. The homeowner may want to consider replacing the ducting systems. Dents and small punctures can lead to major problems down the road. Rust can begin to develop and of course, the loss of conditioned air. Depending on the location of the dent or puncture, small sections may need to be replaced or can be repaired. However, when there is a flaw with the duct work your entire home and wallet will suffer.

Air Conditioner Smells Musty, Like Gas or Other Odor

If you begin to notice a musty smell, you may want to get the air ducts inspected. If condensation frequently builds up in the duct works, mold and mildew can develop which can spread throughout the home. In many cases having the air ducts cleaned and treated for mold can help stop any contamination. However, if the problem is severe it may be best to replace the air ducts, especially if they begin to rust.
