Furnace Troubleshooting in Los Angeles, CA; Intermittent Pilot Ignition, Clogged Air Filters & More

As the weather takes a turn for the colder months, it is important that your heating system is working properly. When you turn on your heat to find nothing but cold air blowing out of the vents, it can leave you cold and uncomfortable. JMS Air Conditioning & Heating is here to share some of the most commons problems we see with heating systems and homeowner’s furnaces in hopes to help you avoid heating problems this winter.

Lack of Routine Heating Maintenance

It is easy to forget how important routine maintenance is when it comes to your HVAC system. As your furnace has sat unused for the entire summer and early fall, there may be some simple maintenance that is required before you turn it on. During the fall, you have the perfect opportunity to have a professional heating technician evaluate your furnace and overall system before it is cold and heat is required for your comfort. This gives you time to have any repairs taken care of before winter hits.

Dirty & Clogged Air Filters

The filters in your furnace are often overlooked until a problem presents itself. Having filters that are kept clean is one of the main ways to extend the life of your furnace. When they are clean, your furnace will get the air flow needed to function properly without having to work so hard to provide you with warm air. If you notice that your furnace isn’t working as well as it normally would, this is the first place you should check.

Intermittent Furnace Pilot or Ignition Control

If the furnace ignition control isn’t working properly, it can create a situation where there is little to no heat generated for your home. Furnaces are equipped with one of two different types of ignition control: hot surface ignition and intermittent pilot. A hot surface ignition is similar to a filament in a light bulb and uses a heating element to ignite the gas burner. The intermittent pilot is a high voltage electrical spark that ignites the gas pilot and then the main burners. If there is ever any sign of an issue with your ignition control, some trouble shooting will make the problem obvious to a heating professional.

Home Thermostat Problems

Having a working thermostat is essential to your heating system’s function. If there is any malfunction that is present, the electrical connection to your furnace will be broken and no heat will be coming on. If your thermostat is older and not digital, you may want to consider replacing it to improve your home’s overall energy efficiency.
